Website Migration Questions
-
Hi,
I have an existing self-hosted blog I’d like to have migrated to a WP Business plan however, I am being told that the exported XML file from my current site exceeds the maximum file-size allowed by your upload tool (it is over 130MB).
Am I still able to proceed with the upgrade? Is this going to end up being an incredibly painful process?

Hi there,
Can you give a link to your current site? How many posts do you have? 130MB is exceptionally large for an export file, and would indicate thousands, if not tens of thousands, of posts and/or comments.
One way to slim down an export file is to clean up comments on the site – make sure the Spam, Trash and Pending folders in comments are empty, and delete any comments that are low-quality or spammy, as comments can very quickly inflate an export file.
Beyond that you can try exporting your content a few months at a time instead of all posts at once, resulting in several smaller files. There are apps you can use to split an XML file.
Or, as you’re planning to upgrade to Business, a migration plugin might also be an option. They don’t work in all cases, though, and there are some precautions you need to take so they don’t break the WordPress.com site in the process, so if you want to try that I’d recommend go ahead with the upgrade and then start a live chat with us so we can look at the options with you and guide you through the process.
