This generally happens when you try to view your site through a secure socket layer (https). So, for example, if you visit https://cannedretina.com, you will receive an error like this:
Basically, the browser is looking for a certificate from cannedretina.comHowever, the certificate is actually appearing from WordPress.com causing a red flag in the browser.
Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to issue a security certificate for cannedretina.com. However, all links on WordPress.com are designed to avoid users receiving this error. When inserting links into your posts, you will want to use the http prefix.
With regards to that user, they may have their browser set-up to default to https links whenever possible. In that case, you could have them insert an exception for cannedretina.com or to change their browser settings.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions!

Thank you for your response. It is rather strange this has just begun to be reported to me. Of course a browser update might trigger such a response if the visitor was unaware of a new default setting..
Is there a way to change the default WordPress URL displayed on my premium site to leave out the “s” in the address?

There is no way to globally force that.
However, it shouldn’t be an issue unless people are specifically trying to go through https for some reason.
