Website transfer

We already have a website with a different supporter however we are looking to transfer over to WordPress. To reduce the downtime of our site, is it possible to work on the website under a different domain name then transfer it over to the correct domain name after the website is complete?

We already have a website with a different supporter however we are looking to transfer over to WordPress.
There are two types of WordPress: WordPress.com (sites are hosted with us) and WordPress.org (the self hosted version). We have some information about the differences between the two here:
On WordPress.com, you can start adding content and customising a free site. The domain can be mapped or transferred here whenever you are ready to make the switch — paid plans include a domain credit which will cover the cost of one of these options.
