Website Transfer

I would like to test out the WordPress platform for our business. I don’t want to deactivate the website (or have it in down time) is there a way that I can test out the system then transfer HTML code over to the WordPress platform?

  • Hi there,

So you have an existing website? Is that site built using the WordPress software, or another system?

Here on WordPress.com you can create a free site in your account using a free WordPress.com address we provide. There’s no need to immediately connect an existing domain to your site, but you can leave that until the very end if you decide to build a site with us, and only switch your domain once you’re ready to take the existing site offline.

That said, WordPress is a content management system (CMS), and the only thing you can transfer to a WordPress site is another site’s content. The WordPress software generates its own HTML, so you won’t be able to transfer an existing website’s HTML to any WordPress site.

But if you can give a link to your existing site, or tell us on which system it’s built, we can advise you regarding the options available to migrate that site to us.

Thanks for the response. We currently use GoDaddy and use their Website Builder (from what they say) similar to WordPress.

  • At this time, we do not have a way to import sites from that.

In this case, I recommend starting at https://learn.wordpress.com/

You should be able to find a similar theme https://wordpress.com/themes and then copy/paste your content.
