What are the benefits of buying a wordpress.com domain ?

I want to know what benefits I will get after buying a wordpress.com domain. Will I be able to customize my blog completely? Will it start supporting javascript widgets? Can I use premium themes with no extra charge ?

If you purchase a domain mapping upgrade all that changes is the URL ie. you get a domain $5. and a domain mapping $13. for one blog and for one year.
