What are your blog subscribers actually subscribed to? WordPress URL or domain name?

  I’m considering starting a new blog with WordPress, but I have some questions before I do. I don’t really want to be ‘stuck’ with one hosting site if I do decide to switch to a different hosting site later on. If I switch to a different hosting site, I’d like to be able to bring all my current subscribers over with me. Are subscribers subscribed to the actual domain itself (so it wouldn’t matter what hosting site I’m using)? Or are subscribers subscribed to the URL with WordPress (in which case I’d have to start my subscribers from scratch)?

  Hi there,

  You can export your email followers as a .csv file, so you can import those to any subscription service that allow you to import that type of file.

  And WordPress.com followers, i.e. people who follow your site via their WordPress.com accounts, can be migrated to another site as long as you use the WordPress software to build the new site, and you use the Jetpack plugin on that site.

  But they’re subscribed to your site, via the unique ID our system generates whenever a new site is created on WordPress.com. They are not subscribed to your domain, as your domain is simply a label, and address where the site is accessed on our servers. If you change hosting and move your domain to that new hosting, it’s like peeling the label off one book and pasting it on another book – now the new book has the name the old book used to have, but moving the label does not also move the content from the old book to the new.
