what happened to my domain name?

Hi, I upgraded using the 14 day premium trail to have my own domain name as maggiekelly.net. But now it shows as maggiekellydotnet.wordpress.com that is not what I want. How can I change it back to what I had originally?

Sorry for the confusion! You can add the domain maggiekelly.net to your site from the Domains page.
On that page, you can register maggiekelly.net as a new domain and choose to add it to your maggiekellydotnet.wordpress.com site. (That address is a free address we use behind the scenes, but once you register the new domain that’s what visitors will see when they look at your site.)

Actually, looking at things a little deeper, I would like to buy shared hosting and create a domain name through them and then download wordpress through wordpress.org . I will no longer need maggiekelly.net blog from wordpress.com.
I actually never wanted a blog but instead wanted a seamless portfolio site. I will create my own.

Sure thing! WordPress.com does have a number of portfolio themes for setting up portfolio sites (with or without a blog), so if you change your mind about self-hosting your site you might want to look at some of those options.
If you have questions about setting up your self-hosted site using the software from WordPress.org, you can get more help with that from the WordPress.org forums. (You’ll need to create a new account to log in to those forums, if you haven’t already.)
