What happens to old sites with domain mapping?
-
I have a very old self-hosted site on a domain I already own and I am trying to update/upgrade my web presence. I think mapping the domain to wordpress.com makes the most sense, but I have some questions and would appreciate some assistance.
1) If I mapped the domain, what would become of the content already on that site?
2) Would I need to continue the hosting services that I currently use? For that matter, would I need third-party hosting at all?
Thank you very much. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The content on the WordPress.COM blog gets a new name (the old name will also work) –

You don’t need to continue the old host –
you DO need to keep the domain name registered somewhere – WordPress.COM does not accept incoming domain registration transfers
Third party host – depends – if you have email with your custom domain name you will need to have the email somewhere – gmail I think will also do that and most hosts have an email only account you can use – the configuration can be a bit tricky depending on where the email is and how sharp their tech support is

Mapping the domain name to a free hosted WordPress.com blog means the content must be in the underlying.wordpress.com blog. So you upgrade the self hosted WordPress.org site to the latest version of wordpress first, delete all spam, disable all plugins and create an XML export file of the content. Then you can import that file of your content into your free hosted WordPress.com blog and purchase the domain mapping upgrade and map to an existing domain.
