What will become of the content once it's exported?

  • Unknown's avatar

I tried to import content from my self-hosting wordpress.org blog (tokyokawaiietc.com) to this wordpress.com brand new blog a few days ago but I still see this message as below and the content doesn’t seem to be imported yet. “Processing…
We’re processing your import now and will send you an email when it’s all done. If you don’t hear from us within 24 hours, please contact support, and we’ll get everything fixed.”

Also I want to make sure when import is completed, what will become of the exported content at the wordpress.org (tokyokawaiietc.com)? Can it keep the content or does it become blank? I’d prefer it’s having the content even after exporting to wordpress.com because if the imported content does not look good at wordpress.com, I want to delete wordpress.com site and keep my old site (wordpress.org, tokyokawaiietc.com). But I was not sure about that point. Thank you for your help.

Staff can help you with the import. I tagged this thread for their assistance. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond.

  • Hi there, I’ve cleared the current import – would you mind trying again and let me know how it goes? If it still doesn’t work I’ll do some tests here.

How large is your export file? If it’s very large, we may need to split it into several smaller file and do the import in stages.

Importing your content from your WordPress.org export file does not remove anything from your other site. It can stay there as long as you want it to.

Just let me know how it goes and we’ll take it from there.

    Hi kathrynwp (staff)

Thank you for your help. Now I realized that my export file size was 20.5MB while the max file size to be imported should be 15MB. So is there a way to export/import by splitting it? Would it be very complicated? How can you help such case?

    Thanks and best regards,

  • Hi there, I’m sending you an email so you can forward me your file for testing, thanks!

    Hi Kathrynwp (staff),

I’ve been contacting you via email but no reply from you. Please check with it. Thanks.

  • Hi there, I received one email from you two days ago, but no file was attached. Could you please try resending it and let me know when you have? Thanks.

  • Hi there – I received the import file you sent on May 12, thanks.

I compressed the file into a Gzip format at under 4 MB, which our importer accepts, and the import is running successfully on a private test site.

It looks like you have posts by three users on your self-hosted site, but there’s currently only one user on your WordPress.com site.

The users on your self-hosted site are: kirin, Apple, and Aki.

The user on your WordPress.com site is: tokyokawaiietc.

Before I try importing your content into the WordPress.com site, would you like to create any additional users so I can map the posts from kirin, Apple, and Aki to separate users? Otherwise, I can just map all their posts to the user tokyokawaiietc.

Please let me know before I try the import on your site.

So again please know that I wish to keep the original content at WordPress.org (tokyokwaiietc.com) even after the content is exported to WordPress.com.

Sure, as I mentioned earlier, importing content from your WordPress.org file does not remove anything from your other site. Importing just copies the content to your WordPress.com site, it doesn’t modify anything on your self-hosted site.

    Hi Kathrynwp,

It’s strange, I didn’t send you the email on May 12. It was Apr.16 that I sent you the email with compressed file of the extension of “.lzh” Yet, what you are speaking above totally makes sense so I believe somehow you received the Apr. 16th email on May. 12?

If you can keep Kirin, Apple and Aki, that’s the best but if you can’t, it’s OK to combine them all under the user “tokyokawaiietc”.

Thank you again for your help. In fact I’ve been wondering if I should re-try to send you the file or just give it up. So it was a surprise that you just received the email I sent about a month ago…

    Thanks and regards.

  • That is very odd about the email delay!

If you can keep Kirin, Apple and Aki, that’s the best but if you can’t, it’s OK to combine them all under the user “tokyokawaiietc”.

I would be glad to map the posts to these three users for you, but you first need to add those users to your site. Here is a guide to adding users:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

Just let me know once that’s done and I can go ahead with the import.

Alternatively, I could add the users for you, but I’ll need you to give me an email address for each user. If you’d like to go that route, please reply to my email with that information and let me know here when you’ve done so. I’ll also need to know which role you’d like each user to have – Administrator, Editor, or Author.

On second thought, would it be possible to keep Kirin and Apple’s content under the user name of “tokyokwaiietc”, meaning not importing Aki’s content?

Sorry for the inconvenience and confusion if any.

  • Sure, everything can imported under the main username.

Do you mean that you don’t want to add the others?
