Whether or not to go Premium? Can you monetize ads on a free site?
-
Hello,
I have recently started a blog about hockey, and have found a small dedicated audience in a short time, through friends and fellow hockey enthusiasts. I am extremely interested in upgrading to premium, but am concerned with the learning curve of ads, and the prospect of setting them up for monetization. The goal for the site is to branch off in the next few weeks and breakdown the busiest season in hockey and I’m not sure what the first steps would be to using ads for money. Ideally i’m not looking to make any meaningful income, just enough to put a dent in yearly fees for word press premium.
In short
– what are the first steps to setting up ads
-can you monetize a wordpress site without going premium?
-what kind of revenue would you expect ?The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Advertisements from third-party ad networks like Google AdSense, OpenX, Lijit, BuySellAds, and Vibrant Media are not allowed on WordPress.com. If you’d like to run these types of ads on your blog, you may wish to try a self-hosted WordPress installation.
You can try WordAds:
The WordAds program has a minimum traffic requirement before your site can be accepted. Once you have reached that amount your site will be automatically accepted in.
Alternatively, if you purchase our premium subscription you will be automatically accepted into WordAds.
If you decide to go that route, once you have paid for Premium go to WordPress.com/plans/my-plan
Scroll down to the bottom, there will be a button labeled Start Earning, click on that to join WordAds.
Fill out your info and you will be all set.
To know more about the same, please read the following link:

Hi there,
There’s no learning curve at all for using ads on WordPress.com :)
Upgrade to a plan, add your own domain, and apply for WordAds. Once you are accepted (which happens automatically if you have the Premium or Business plan), go to My Site ->Plans and click the Start Earning button. That will take you to the WordAds settings where you give us your PayPal address and your social security number if you’re a US resident (for tax purposes), and that’s it.
No coding is needed, but also note that you don’t control which ads show on your site. That is determined by the location and browser history of people viewing your site.
You can learn more about WordAds here:
As I said, with Premium you’re approved automatically, but you can also apply if you don’t have Premium, as long as you have a custom domain connected to your site. In the support doc @assadaboultaif linked to above we also outline some other methods you can use to make an income with your site, none of which require ownership of a plan, but all of which require a bit more work on your part.
On this one:
what kind of revenue would you expect ?
That varies a lot. Advertisers bid in real time on ad space on your site, and how much they bid depend on, among other factors, where your site’s visitors are coming from, the type of content you post, what other advertisers are bidding, and of course the overall state of the advertising market at the moment (it’s been on a steady decline the past few years).
To make a few dollars a month, you need at least a few thousand views. To make double or triple digits we’re speaking of tens of thousands of views a month.
I hope that clarifies things a bit for you.
