white screen

  • Unknown's avatar

If I try and do anything at all with my website mccoll.wordpress.com, I get a white screen with no error message. It’s driving me to despair… there is a lot on the web about it but I’m not experienced or savvey enough to even try the suggestions.
    Please help me

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I am not having any trouble seeing your site. Here is a screenshot:

What happens if you attempt to view it in a different browser, so you get the same result?

Day after day when I try to edit my website a white screen appears with no error message.. yes it may not happen every time and yes I did manage to get on using Explorer but it doesn’t help me understand the issue or how to fix it when it happens. It is a problem with WordPress I gather and I d like to low before upgrading or setting up other sites if there is a solution. Thanks
    Sam

  • It is a problem with WordPress

It is not a problem we can replicate on our end. And the fact that you are able to access the site using one browser but not another indicates that the issue is on your end rather than ours.

Are you using the most recent version of all browser? Do you have any browser extensions or plugins running? Do you have any security programs blocking sites from runn, for example, javascript?

Goodness – I’m not sure about these last questions – can you help me to run a check? There is loads on the web about the dreaded white page with WordPress (but I can’t fathom the solutions) – are you saying I’m the first person who has approached you about it?

  • >can you help me to run a check?

I’m afraid that is not the sort of thing that can be done remotely. I would have to be sitting in front of your computer.

You are probably reading about the “white screen of death” as described here:

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Common_WordPress_Errors

The WSOD has to do with self-hosted WordPress.org sites and not WordPress.com sites. While similar, .com and .org are different in a number of ways (http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/). This is one of them. A white screen on a WordPress.com site is virtually always something wrong on the viewers side of things. Particularly when one of your browsers can view it and another browser cannot.

this is encouraging – thanks. I do have java script running. I can see my website easily on both chrome and explorer, but with chrome I have an editing tool on the page which I can usually click on to edit a post. It’s when I click this that I get the white screen. On explorer I see the website as a reader does with no editing tool on the page or links to customise etc. I can add /wp – admin and access the admin page, but that’s quite different. I guess you are just seeing my website like a reader – this is not the issue. Might I be able to speak with someone. I am new to this and was getting on well building my site – but this problem seems out of my IT capability. Talking things through might help me! cheers

This is probably because you are not logged into WordPress.com on explorer. Try going to https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php and logging in.

Might I be able to speak with someone.

As I am WordPress.com staff, there isn’t really anyone else to talk to. Particularly since the issue appears to be on your end of things and there isn’t much we can do about it without coming to your house (sadly, we do not do housecalls).
