Why are you charging me?

I thought WordPress was free? Why is there an option for £3 per month – £26 per month? Is it free or not?
I have a domain but now Im trying to use it to set up my (apparently!) free website

Hi there, WPcom provides free websites that use a subdomain address of .wordpress.com or .home.blog. If you want to use a custom domain you purchased elsewhere with your free WPcom site, you’d need to upgrade your site to at least the Personal plan to do so. Alternatively, you can use your custom domain on 3rd party hosting (not WPcom) using the free WP software downloaded at https://wordpress.org and supported at https://wordpress.org/support
