Why can't I access the Appearance Editor screen or any of my .php files?

    Hi!

My problem started when I noticed the Read More tag didn’t work on one of my pages. As I dug deeper to find a solution, I realized I don’t have all the administrative privileges I believe I should—I can’t access the Appearance Editor screen, I don’t see a Plugins menu, I can’t access any of my .php files by typing directly in the browser… It’s like I’m a user and not the admin of my site, and I don’t know why.

Can you help? Thanks so much!

  • It sounds like you are reading instructions that are intended for a WordPres.org blog. To clear up any confusion, while similar in many ways, WordPress.org and WordPress.com are different platforms:

Oh man! You are totally right. Thanks a lot. (I remember now that I used to have a .org blog at an old job and guess I was used to that setup.)

Could I ask a few different questions now? I’d still love to do the following things but am not sure I can with WP.com—could you advise?

    – Can I install plugins (such as to put a slideshow on the homepage)?
    – The “read more” tag doesn’t seem to work on static pages, only on blog pages. Is there another way to truncate text on static pages (in my case, this would be nice to do on my Portfolio and Work With Me pages)?
    – Under Appearance –> Menus, all my menu info is grayed out. Is there some way to edit it? (I would get rid of the “Home” link if possible, since users can just click on the title/header to get home.)

Thanks again very much! Really appreciate your help.

Plugins are a feature of WordPress.org sites, they are not available on WordPress.com sites.

Not really. The “more” tag is designed to assist with the layout of blog posts on a “posts” page. There isn’t the same sort of situation for static pages. Your best bet is probably just to make additional pages and link to them if you want to break things up into chunks.

That is because you have not made a menu yet. So the theme is probably using a default one. Try creating a menu and seeing how things work out. Here’s a great support page on menus:

    Menus

Take a look through that page and let me know if you have any further questions. I’ll be happy to help.

Thank you, rootjosh! That’s all very helpful. I’ll try creating a menu and let you know if I have further questions. Thanks again!
