Why does videopress reduce the quality of my videos?
-
When I upload high quality videos to Videopress the picture becomes grainey and unviewable! This only happens for videos that I upload in 1024×768 and not for 1280×720.

How can I upload a video that is 1024×768 and have it display correctly?

I have tried re-encoding it to 1280x??? an I do not get a variable file. I have never had this problem with other platforms… so what is going wrong?
-
Howdy,
Could you send me a link to the exact video you’re referring to?
I’ll be happy to take a look. :-)

VSALM10 – Overview – IntelliTrace and Test impact: [wpvideo 8KoCIhaX]
VSALM10 – Overview – A day in the life: [wpvideo 8KoCIhaX]These videos were uploaded at 1024×768 but it do not have HD buttons. Others uploaded at 1024 do… for example:
VSALM10 – Overview – Architecture: [wpvideo QH4kNv3L]
VSALM10 – Overview – Microsoft Test Manager: [wpvideo tRL553V6] -
It can take just a little bit longer for the HD version to be ready.
Can you please link us to exactly where the videos are displayed?
-
That was just uploaded an hour ago, so it could take a bit more for the HD version to finish processing.
I recommend checking again later tonight or tomorrow.
-
Yes it was, as a replacement for one that I uploaded yesterday that did not get an HD version! I am finding that it can take more than 12 hours to get an HD version. If so, that is OK, I just want to know so I am not frustratingly re uploading and re-encoding for hours…
I also don’t get HD for: http://blog.hinshelwood.com/visual-studio-2010-overview-a-day-in-the-life-of/
-
I have a strong feeling that one is in the same boat. Let’s see what happens tomorrow, just to be sure.
-
23 hours with NO HD: http://videohinsh.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/vsalm10-overview-a-day-in-the-life-fixed.mp4
16 hours with HD: http://videohinsh.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/vsalm10-overview-intellitrace-and-test-impact.mp4 (This one was re-uploaded)
-
Ok, something is definitely amiss then. Are both original videos the same dimensions?
If so, would you please try uploading the one that didn’t complete its HD transcode again?
-
Yes, I can… but this has happened a few times! I have had to re-upload more than a couple of videos…
And yes, they are all of the same dimensions (1024×768)…All my old videos are 1024… new ones are 1280.
-
I have a slight feeling that the HD transcode may be choking on the size of the video, but it may be at random, possible related to overall load.
For now, re-uploading may work (it can’t hurt at least), and on Monday I can have our VideoPress expert take a look.
-
I am not currently happy with the HD quality level anyway! its less than the uploaded quality in all cases…Even when I upload 128×720 content the resultanty video is grainy!
-
Hm, ok that’s probably related then. I’ll drop in a request for our VideoPress guru, but I can’t guarantee that he’ll respond before Monday.
Sorry for the trouble!
-
Monday is just fine… I love the simplicity of the service (and the price) and I want to make it work for me…
-
It looks like you’ve met some of the thresholds on our encoder.
In order to be encoded in HD, the video must be at least 1280×720, and less than 1 hour long. In both cases, the videos are over an hour, so they don’t make the HD cut.
I one case, the video was over 2 hours, so it didn’t make the DVD-quality cut either.
We’re looking into possibly raising those thresholds, but I can’t make any promises at this point.
-
OK… this makes the service unusable for me…I guess I will need to go with YouTube or Screencast…you should really add this to your documentation as I feel like I have been miss sold…
How do I go about getting a refund?
-
Since the VideoPress subscription was purchased back in October it’s well past our 30 day refund preiod. At this point we’re not able to generate a refund for it as it’s close to 3 months old.
You might want to try splitting the videos in to 2 parts. Or, I could cancel the upgrade now and leave it as credit on your account, so if the thresholds are ever increased in the future, you could re-purchase it for free.
