Why does WordPress not recognize my login?

  A few months ago I created a website on WordPress (I had purchased a domain through HostGator and followed steps online to step up a website on WordPress.) Today I attempted to log in to my WordPress to update the website, and I received an error message that my login email is not a valid email even though I receive emails from WordPress in my email. I tried the ‘Lost Password’ option but I have not received any email for several minutes. Why does WordPress not recognize my email, and how can I fix it so that I can log in to my website and update it?
