Why doesn't my uploaded theme show in dashboard?

When I upload a downloaded theme via filezilla it doesn’t show up in my dashboard. I created my wordpress through godaddy, and it is hosted by godaddy as I registered the domain I use with them..
My concern is that godaddy automatically creates your wordpress on wordpress.COM and so manual tinkerings such as uploading themes are not permitted. However, why would they do this as there is no need to host a wordpress.COM via a third party site surely?
I am very confused + I am wondering why something so simple as changing a theme to one I have downloaded can be made so difficult?

I have resolved this issue.
My domain was pointing towards the WordPress servers, and so any changes in wp-admin weren’t coming through when I logged in.
To solve, I simply went to ‘My account’ on godaddy,>Domains>Launch>Manage server and changed it to ‘standard’
hope this helps anyone with similar issues
