Why won't my old posts load correctly in my blog's new theme?
-
This weekend I changed my blog theme and purchased the custom design option. Since I have had the new design, I noticed a sharp decline in the number of hits I usually get to my most popular posts. When I did my own Google search for the post and clicked on the link in Google, the link come up blank in my blog! Just the home page with nothing on it except “Home>” at the top. I need to fix this stat because it’s a very important resource by which people get to my blog. Why would the old links not work simply because the blog theme/design has been changed? I’ve never encountered this problem before – help!! Thank you.

Just to further update as I’m trying to solve this problem – it appears that the old posts which will not load (either in search engine searches or from links on my blog itself – even more problematic!) are posts that were never put into the “categories” that I currently use. Could this be the problem? Do I have to go back and assign categories to all these posts to get them to load properly? I’m so confused as to why their original links do not work.

Hi there, would you mind providing 3 or 4 links to posts that won’t load so I can investigate? Thanks very much.

http://motheringspirit.wordpress.com/2011/05/14/sabbath-part-2-how-to/The problem does seem to be with the categories. If I go back and put these older, uncategorized posts into a category, then they show up. But am I going to have to go through every single old post to recategorize now?? Thanks so much.

Thanks for the links. You’re right – the problem does seem to be related to categories.
A post must always be assigned to at least one category. The way WordPress usually works, if you don’t assign a post to a category, it automatically gets assigned by the system to the default “Uncategorized” category.
In the case of these broken posts, they somehow aren’t assigned even to the default “Uncategorized category,” which is breaking things.
If you like, I could try to locate all the affected posts and automatically assign them to Uncategorized, to get them displaying again. Just let me know if you’d like me to try to do that. Thanks!
