Why won't WP let me upload my own theme to the dashboard.
-
I’ve worked with WP before, and usually, uploading a theme is as easy as WP Dashboard>Appearance>Themes>Add New. Now, the “Add New” button is not showing up and when i go to “/wp-admin/theme-install.php” it tells me I am lost.
Why can’t I upload my own theme?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Because as you have noted, there is no Add New theme button on your blog. That is because it is a WordPress.COM blog and for security reasons you cannot add external themes or plugins to a Wp.com blog. You are clearly remembering how things work on WordPress.ORG. They don’t work that way here.

The only themes we can use on WordPress.com blogs like your blog are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/
Relevant support docs:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/There is no upgrade you can purchase that changes that. WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can create themes, upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database, etc. If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install.

Hi,
Let me try and shed some light. There are 2 versions of WordPress. There the WordPress.com that is service that allows you to no worry about hosting and such, free of charge, but it won’t allow you to upload your themes or plugins for performance and security reasons. But it does allow you to choose from 300+ themes (both free and premium). Then there is the WordPress you get from WordPress.org that is the actual code/script that will allow you to run WordPress on you own hosting (this the important part) thus giving you free reign over what themes and plugins you use. There are hosting providers out there that offer special WordPress hosting so you don’t have to worry so much about configuring things ( see here https://wordpress.org/hosting/). So you need this second option if you choose to use your own themes, regardless how you upload them
I hope this made things a little bit clearer for you.

@levieirinberg
The codex is the support documentation that’s ONLY for WordPress.ORG installs and not for your blog WordPress.COM blog at all.You cannot upload any third party themes into any WordPress.COM blog period.
