Widgets don't show

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there. My widgets don’t show up on the home page, just at the bottom of each post. How can i make them show on the main home page?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

The Columnist theme only displays widgets on Pages and Single Post pages:

Four widget areas are provided enabling you to add your own custom content directly below the content area in single posts and pages. Widgets will not appear in any template where multiple posts are displayed.

If you’d like to find a different theme that displays widgets on the front page, check out our theme showcase:

Thanks so much! Might have to change themes then — am I not right in thinking that most people would want links to Recent posts etc from the front page rather than at the bottom of each individual post?

Sorry, me again — and can I not even put the little facebook and twitter logos/links on the front page either with Columnist?

Some people definitely want to display widgets on their front page. And we have tons of themes that let you do that! But The Columnist is one of only a few that don’t display any widgets on the front page.

You can see a demo of the Columnist theme here:

    http://thecolumnistdemo.wordpress.com/

All of our themes have demos that you can check out so that you can find out what the features and widget areas look like in each theme. You can also search for particular features, like a sidebar, through our theme showcase:

Here’s a search for responsive themes with two columns:

ok great. thanks so much! looks like i will have to change themes then!

I’m now trying to create a new page on the front page — a Contact me page. And i thought i had but it didn’t show, once again. I am still working in Columnist. Does this theme only allow one page (I’ve already created an About me page)? There is also a Home page which I didn’t set up and I cannot get rid of. Sooo frustrating!

I just took a look at your site and I see a link to the Contact Me page on the left. Is that what you wanted?

Let me know how I can help!

I think that’s because I just changed it to the Suburbia theme! I really like the Columnist theme though and want to do it with that, but I think it doesn’t allow more than one Page (other than About me) on the front page. Do you think that’s right?

I also really want to make it very easy for people to follow me by putting a Follow me widget on the front page rather than just at the bottom of each post. People keep asking me how to follow me, it’s very frustrating!

PS I do appreciate all this help btw!

You can definitely have more than one page in the Columnist. If you switch your theme back I can check why your Contact page isn’t displaying and point you in the right direction!

We try to make it as easy as possible for your readers to subscribe to your blog with or without a WordPress.com account. There are some follow options built into your site already. Anyone who is logged into a WordPress.com account will see this Follow button at the top of your site:

Anyone who is not logged into a WordPress.com account will see this at the bottom of their browser window when visiting your site:

The email option for logged out users will not require your followers to create a WordPress.com account. However, they will need to confirm that their subscription by clicking a link in a confirmation email from WordPress.com.

Hi again — I’ve now switched my theme back to Columnist and seem to have managed to create a Contact me page on the front page, but it isn’t showing any text when I click on it. Am I being very thick?!

  • Unknown's avatar

Great! It looks like you currently have three Contact Me pages in your menu. You can delete the ones that don’t go where you want from your menu through Appearance > Menus. Just open the menu item you don’t need and click on Remove.

Oh I see. I kept trying to ‘trash’ the extra Contact me pages on Pages and it didn’t seem to work! So I have to go to Appearance Menus each time to delete or add a page?

Also, is there any way to add a video link either to a page or to a post?

Thanks again for your fab help!

Right, i’ve managed to delete the extra Contact me pages but the one I have remaining is not showing any content, despite it showing content when i look at it in Pages. ??

It looks like it’s maybe just an outdated link since you were deleting pages. Let’s try adding that link fresh to your menu. Go ahead and delete the one you have currently. Then from the panel on the left, click on Pages and select your “Contact Me” page. (If you don’t see it, try clicking on All Pages.)

Then click on Add to Menu and position it where you want it in the menu.

Also, is there any way to add a video link either to a page or to a post?

Sure! We support easy embedding of videos from many sources, which you can read about here:

    Working With Video

But you can also add a link to anything you have a URL for. Here’s some info on setting up links:
