Will WordPress do what I'm looking for?
-
I’m just getting started here, so I’ll be working through the traditional rookie stuff. I’ve got a good grasp of the blogging capabilities of the program (I’m bringing a blog from another site to WP), but what I was hoping for was more of a website, not just the blogging thing. Specifically, I’d like to feature several different pages with a couple of different blogs, a downloadable book, links, etc.–but I’d like to have each page feature its own header and theme. Is that possible here? What am I not seeing on the dashboard that allows me to custom format each page?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Each site here on WordPress.com comes with one dynamic page where your blog Posts go. Depending on theme, it is possible to create a Custom Menu to have those Posts appear in your theme’s navigation bar or widget. You can have as many Pages as you’d like.
It is not possible to have different themes on different pages here. However, some themes, like Twenty Ten, will allow you to upload a separate header for each Page (but oddly enough, not its subpage).
If you are very new here, I heartily recommend that you read http://learn.wordpress.com/ and become familiar with the search function in the Support docs http://en.support.wordpress.com/

Something like that’ll do fine, I think. I misspoke–I understand it’s impossible to have a separate THEME on each page (what would be the point of that?). But I need the header to be different enough that readers will know the content of the page they’re looking at.
Is there any way to check a theme to see if, like Twenty Ten, it will allow for different headers on the primary pages?
I appreciate your answer, jennifer. You’ve been a big help.

You’re welcome.
Check out the Theme Showcase (link at the top of this page) and in the feature filters, check “Featured Image” and “apply filter”. You’ll have to explore each theme a little, as a Featured Image is not necessarily a header on some of them.

See here for a list of themes where the Featured image becomes the custom header:

Oh, and when you do set up your site, take into consideration what I said earlier about headers on subpages not being the same as their parent page, although you can upload the same header again on Pages.
Where you cannot change the header are the dynamically created pages, like categories and archive pages.
