won’t remove email from an old account

Hi! So I opened an account a few years ago that I never used and I want to open a new one under a different user name. So I opened a new one under a backup email address and deleted the old one. But it won’t let me add my proper email address to the new one because it’s presumably still associated with old account I just deleted. How do I make WP forget the old email so I can get my proper email connected to my new account? Thanks!

  • Deleted email addresses are held for a month, so it won’t be available just yet.

Have you thought about using a gmail alias? Instead of using this:

    yourrealemail (at) gmail (dot) com

    Use this:

    yourrealemail+otheraccount (at) gmail (dot) com

You can make that +1, +whatever, +doesnotmatter … whatever letters or numbers make the most sense to you. Gmail will ignore the plus sign and anything after it. But we won’t, so it’s in effect a second email account that delivers to the same address.

Want to give that a try?

Yes! That’s fascinating! I had no idea you could do that. Thanks!

But I’m a little confused about the format. So let’s say my real email is awesomedude (at) awesomedude (dot) net (it’s not), I would enter:

awesomedude (at) awesomedude (dot) net+backupgmailaccount (at) gmail (dot) com?

My real email address isn’t gmail. It’s my own server.

    Thanks!

  • You can only do this with a Gmail address, or with a Google G Suite email account.

But there’s another option: Do you still have the confirmation email we sent you when you closed the other account? Reply to that, and ask to manually delete the email address from the closed account so that you can re-use the email address.

We should be able to do that, but we can only do it if the request comes from that actual email address.
