  I am trying to install the free wordfence for my school but I am getting a message that I have to upgrade to a business plan in order to install.

  Correct account: Yes

  You can’t install third party plugins on the wordpress.com platform unless you upgrade to the Business Plan.

  On the other hand, you don’t need to install Wordfence as wordpress.com takes care of the security.

  Most important for you:

  • make sure you choose a really strong password
  • activate 2FA, https://en.support.wordpress.com/security/two-step-authentication/
