Wordpess.org requirements

I am looking to upgrade me current wordpress.com site to a wordpress.org. The one thing I am uncertain about is whether the dashboard functionality will be different. I once worked with a wordpress.org site and to change anything I need to know the code. I suppose my question is, do I need to know front-end coding to be able to make changes in WordPress.org.? Will I have the same easy dashboard and features as I currently do in wordpress.com?

Also, if my site laconquistadora.wordpress.com is hosted with wordpress as http://www.traveling-in-heels.com.

    Many Thanks,
    Alexandra

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Alexandra!

Questions about WordPress.org are better posed to the WordPress.org community here:

    http://wordpress.org/support/

But, I can answer this question as well. :) You do not need to know how to code in order to run a WordPress site. The core WordPress dashboard is essentially the same as what you see here:

    http://laconquistadora.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

You’ll probably want to install some plugins, and a theme that suits you. This can sometimes get a little technical. And you may need to make some server changes to import your current WordPress into your new one.

But the WordPress.org community is huge and thriving! And they can help you out with all of it.

If this sounds daunting, maybe you can tell me more about why you’re headed to a self hosted site and I can see if there are ways you can do those things here on WordPress.com.

    Hi Shawna,

Thanks so much for getting back to me. Happy to hear the dashboards are similar. One of the main plug-ins I want to add is this one: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-gallery-custom-links/. I’m looking to add links to the galleries I have on my site.

If my site is hosted by wordpress.com as traveling-in-heels.com, will i need to find another hosting site, when I switch to wordpress.org?

    Many Thanks,
    Alexandra

Thanks for that. I took a look and unfortunately we do not support that functionality. So you’re totally on the right track looking at a self hosted site.

If my site is hosted by wordpress.com as traveling-in-heels.com, will i need to find another hosting site, when I switch to wordpress.org?

Yes you will. We have a few suggested hosts here:

    Hosting

And if you want help setting up your new site, we offer guided transfer if you choose of the hosts at the link above:

    https://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/guided-transfer/

We’re doing some work on the Guided Transfer tools, so it’s unavailable at this exact moment, but you’ll be able to purchase that again soon if you want to go that route. :)

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks Shawna. So if I already paid for my annual subscription for wordpress to host my site, will I get reimbursed, or do I end up having to pay two hosting companies?

It looks like the only upgrade you have is your domain. This is not a hosting charge (hosting at WordPress.com is free!) but is a payment for your domain itself.

To move to a new host and keep using your domain, you can either update your DNS settings (I can help you with this) or you can transfer your domain entirely to your new host.
