  I am unable to use wordpress for free and install my own theme. I also have my own domain which I dont want to attach just yet

  If you are hoping to set up a free WordPress.com site, you will not be able to install WordPress themes downloaded elsewhere. On WordPress.com, installing external themes requires our Business plan: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

  However, Free WordPress.com sites can choose from over 100 themes: https://wordpress.com/themes/free

  If you decide that you do want to use your existing domain name, you will need to set up Domain Mapping (included with every paid WordPress.com site plan):
