.WordPress.com no longer a thing?
-
Does WordPress not give you the free .wordpress.com domain name anymore? I use WordPress a lot for work, but am always using .org for clients, as they have hosting with another service already and are just looking for a website. Haven’t used WordPress.com in a few years and I’m totally stumped with it wanting you to pick a .com, .org, etc., right away without giving you the regular .wordpress.com site first.

Hi there,
Have you tried typing the whole address (e.g. myfreesite.wordpress.com)? Are you still not getting any suggestion for a free site?
-
Yes, I did try that. It’s only giving me “.home.blog” as an extension.
In the “old” days, you were able to just sign up and it generated the .wordpress.com URL for you…has this since changed?

Follow up question–
If I took the dirtyblondeco.home.blog address, just to start working on getting my site together, would it still be possible to do domain mapping with the domain I purchased from GoDaddy once I’m ready to publish my website?

Hi dirtyblondeco,
It’s only giving me “.home.blog” as an extension.
Under certain conditions (like the ones you’ve mentioned here) we are offering free .blog subdomains as an alternative to the standard .wordpress.com subdomains — which why there weren’t listed as an option in this case.
would it still be possible to do domain mapping with the domain I purchased from GoDaddy once I’m ready to publish my website?
Absolutely! The GoDaddy domain can be mapped to WordPress.com with these steps:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
Once that is all set up, the free address will be hidden and visitors will only see the custom domain in their browser’s address bar.
I’ll be here if you have any questions.

I am having the same issue, and I am not planning to connect the blog to a domain. Is there any way to get the [myblog].wordpress.com domain?
