WordPress.com page editing

In Page Edit mode, my video blocks show “This Video is Private” & underneath, is the word “Unknown”. Yet viewing the domain in a browser (Safari) the video is not ‘Private’ & plays normally. It’s frustrating me that I cannot see the video when editing the page!

Can anyone tell me what is wrong please?

Hi there! I completely understand the frustration to see that ‘Private’ warning when you’re trying to edit your content.

Since your site is currently under construction, I couldn’t check the front end myself. However, the videos should be working just fine! You can double-check this by clicking the Preview button at the top of your editor. If the video plays there, you’re all set—your video settings are correct, and your visitors will see them as intended.

This is a known display issue where browsers with strict privacy policies, like Safari, prevent the editor from authenticating the video thumbnail. Because the editor can’t ‘talk’ to the video server, it defaults to showing that placeholder message.

And also you can try using a different browser like Chrome or Firefox to edit your site. These browsers often handle the connection to the video server more smoothly than Safari, so you’re less likely to see those incorrect warning messages while you’re in the editor.

Please do let me know if that works for you!

  • Hi there,

I can see what’s happening here: The “This video is private” message showing in the editor is a known bug with the core Video block when it’s used with VideoPress videos. It’s purely a display issue inside the editor and doesn’t affect your visitors at all, which is exactly why the videos play normally when you view your site in the browser.

The quickest fix right now is to swap any core Video blocks for the VideoPress block instead. Both are available in the block inserter — just search for “VideoPress” when adding a new block. The VideoPress block handles the authentication correctly and will show your videos properly while editing.

    To swap them:

    1. Open the page in the editor.
    2. Select the video block showing the “Private” message.
    3. Remove it.
    4. Add a new VideoPress block in its place.
    5. Select the same video from your Media Library.

The development team is aware of the bug and working on a fix so the core Video block handles this correctly too. In the meantime, the VideoPress block is the way to go.

    Hope this helps!
