WordPress.com Source Code Access
-
Hello,
I have a lot of experience with custom self-hosted WordPress.org theming, but no experience with the WordPress.com product. I’ve been asked if the WordPress.com product offers access to the source files (PHP, CSS, etc) and source directory, and cannot find explicit statements on the site that it does not. I understand that this type of custom theming isn’t really the intent of WordPress.com but, just so I can answer the question properly, is there any aspect of the WordPress.com product that offers source code editing access? I mean more than just a ‘custom CSS’ field in an admin dashboard. The closest feature I’ve been able to find in the docs has been this: creating a child theme in a Business level account. https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/uploading-setting-up-custom-themes/child-themes/
Is this the only way in the WordPress.com product to create custom theme templates (structure and styling), and is it only possible in the Business pricing tier?
Thank you! -
wordpress.com doens’t allow access to the source code at all. As you found out yourself a child theme in the Business Plan is the closest feature you can get.
