WordPress Core Version Updates – jumping from old to latest
-
I’m just about to do an update from 6.2.9 to 6.9.4 and in addition to checking backup I’m checking ‘restore point’ as well incase something goes wrong but how do I use restore point should something go wrong? Is this a big jump? Is it likely to be complicated? I’m a newbie so I’m grateful for any help I can get!

Hi there! Yes, 6.2.9 to 6.9.4 is a fairly big jump, but on WordPress.com the core WordPress version is managed for you. The main thing to watch is whether any plugins or third-party themes have compatibility issues.
If something goes wrong you can use a restore point from your dashboard under Jetpack → Backup. Pick the last good backup from before the update, then choose “Restore to this point” and “Restore now.” This guide walks through the process: https://wordpress.com/support/restore/
Restoring a backup replaces your site with the backup you choose, so save any newer changes first!
If your plan includes staging, I’d test the update there first: https://wordpress.com/support/how-to-create-a-staging-site/
That lets you check the site without affecting the live version.I’d also make sure plugins and themes are fully updated, since those are usually where problems show up after a WordPress version change. This guide has more on WordPress versions and troubleshooting after updates: https://wordpress.com/support/check-your-wordpress-version/

Thanks! I did the update and it went find. I actually did the plugin updates afterwards and all went well. Now I’ve come to themes and I think that’s something I have to do more carefully as I know the ones I”m using are very outdated and this can change the whole look of my site. I’m not sure how to proceed actually. I added the WP Staging plugin to test out the newer versions but the free plugin won’t work with something called ‘multisite’ which I never even knew about and has been causing problems. I just want to get rid of it as I’m only using one site but I’m so out of my depth. ;-)
