If you changed your name servers somewhere else to point to WordPress.com please provide more information.
What is the domain URL? -
The WordPress support page says “…when name servers are updated, it can take some time for the change to take full effect (up to 72 hours, but normally much less)… – ….After the name server change takes effect, go to Store -> Domains in your blog’s dashboard, enter the domain into the form at the top of the page, and click the Add domain to blog button. If the name servers are verified, you will be prompted to pay for the upgrade and complete the process.”
I just made the change from my old domain name server to WordPress less than an hour ago. How do I know when and if the name server to change to WordPress takes full effect? I haven’t gone to the store yet because the The WordPress support page says “…when name servers are updated…’ How do I know when the servers are updated?
The site is still private now until we launch it. Thank you for your help!

The last site I moved I think I waited 5 minutes then added the domain mapping – worked fine – as soon as you change the name servers your custom domain name starts being sent to the new name server location – if you don’t have domain mapping in place your visitors will just get sent to a black hole error message – results will be erratic because your information is not updated in an instant so there is old date on some routers and hubs –

PS – if you post both the custom domain name and blog you want to map to then we can probably give you some accurate help – until then the above info is all we can do
