I am trying to import my WordPress.org (Bluehost) site to WordPress.com but my email address is already on WordPress.com and when I log in it is like I am still in the Bluehost WordPress. When I try to import the old WordPress content a notice states I am not authorized to do this. How do I disconnect the old WordPress account from WordPress.com so I can import the file?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @justjennifer , thank you for this answer!

Do you know if it is also possible vice-versa: using the backup of a wordpress.com site to move it to a wordpress.org site hosted by any hosting provider? I heard contradicting things about that, some say that if your site contains text + images such a move is hard to do. Others say this process is flawless too.

Hey @treesschepens I answered you in your forum thread at https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/is-wordpress-com-a-better-option-for-me-than-wordpress-org-can-you-easily-move/#post-4103695

You can find all your forum topics by clicking on your username at the top right of any forum page, where it says “Welcome, yourusername.”

Hope that helps, but if you have more questions about this, please follow up in the thread I linked to. Cheers!

    Hi @museumofparentinghistory,

There’s no need to “disconnect” your WordPress.org (Bluehost) site from WordPress.com. They are separate systems, even if you’re using the same email address.

The “not authorized” message usually happens when:

    • You’re trying to import from the wrong dashboard, or
    • The file/user permissions don’t match the site you’re importing into

    What to do

    1. Make sure you’re logged into your WordPress.com site dashboard here:
      https://wordpress.com/sites
    2. Then go to:
      Tools → Import → WordPress
    3. Upload the export file from your Bluehost site

    Guide:
    https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-content/ Easier option (recommended)

You can also request a full migration and let us handle everything: https://wordpress.com/support/request-a-free-migration/

If you’re still seeing the “not authorized” error, could you share:

    • A screenshot of where you’re clicking/importing
    • Whether you’re inside wordpress.com or your Bluehost dashboard

That will help us pinpoint it quickly.
