WordPress update fault

  Wordpress will not let me update onto a new updated version. The update button is greyed out when I know that we are on about version 4.5 when it should be the latest. I have spoken with our website developer and he does not know how to correct this and believes we may have to manually do the update- we would rather not do this to risk losing the site. Please can you assist?
