WordPress won’t let me import tumblr blog

Just as the title says. I have two blogs, a primary and a secondary. I’ve decided to import my secondary here so I can set it up under its own account, but where it should say import, there was a red X and the phrase “custom domain” with a message below saying I need to disconnect the custom domain.

I did so, to the point where on tumblr it says the domain name is not connected anymore, yet I keep getting the same result here. I’ve tried disconnecting the tumblr several times, yet I keep getting the same result. I don’t know what else to do.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The reason you keep seeing the custom domain error is because the WordPress.com importer tool caches your Tumblr account metadata the moment you first click to connect. Even though you successfully removed the custom domain inside Tumblr, the importer is still looking at that old, cached profile snapshot. To force the system to clear its memory, you need to break the connection on both sides: first, go into your Tumblr Account Settings under the Apps/Applications tab and explicitly revoke permissions for WordPress. Once that is done, return to your WordPress.com dashboard, clear your browser cache/cookies, and restart the import process. Re-authorizing the connection from scratch will force the tool to read your updated Tumblr settings cleanly and unlock the import button for your secondary blog!

  • It sounds like you’ve already taken the right first step by disconnecting the custom domain on the Tumblr side — that part is done.

The issue is that the WordPress.com importer still has a cached snapshot of your Tumblr account from when you first connected it. Even though the custom domain is gone on Tumblr’s end, the importer here hasn’t refreshed that information yet. Here’s how to fix it:

    1. Go to your site’s WP Admin Tumblr importer page. You can get there by visiting:
      yoursitename.wordpress.com/wp-admin/admin.php?import=tumblr
(Replace “yoursitename” with your actual WordPress.com site address.)
    2. At the bottom of that page, you should see a “Clear account information” link. Click it and confirm.
    3. While you’re at it, head over to your Tumblr Account Settings → Apps and revoke access for WordPress if it’s listed there.
    4. Clear your browser cache, then go back to the Tumblr importer page and reconnect your Tumblr account from scratch.

Once you re-authorize, the importer will pull in your updated Tumblr blog info (without the custom domain flag), and you should see the “Import this blog” button for your secondary blog.
