Ah yes, I was a bit frustrated when I wrote that, obviously. To clarify, WordPress.com is useless. The open source project might be fine, or not, I have no idea.

Which ties into my real complaint. I created a free account here to find out if WordPress (in either sense) might be right for me. Especially with the new editor coming out… I’m always a bit suspicious of that kind of thing, I’m thinking of Wikipedia’s Visual Editor for instance.

Well it turns I’m not even allowed to to learn how this software works on a free account, because every single feature is locked behind a paywall. Basic features like installing a theme. It’s ridiculous.

After about the third time it goes “I can’t let you do that, Dave”, I made this post and deleted my blog. I would not recommend anyone use wordpress.com for a free blog. And frankly they’d also be a be a fool to spring for a paid one when they can’t even try anything out first.

  • Hi there,

every single feature is locked behind a paywall. Basic features like installing a theme

WordPress.com uses a modified version of the open source WordPress software, and this version has always had some restrictions:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Until May 2017 it was not possible to install third party themes and plugins on WordPress.com at all. That ability was introduced on May 2017, but due to the higher technical and support cost of allowing software we don’t control being installed on our servers we have limited that ability to the Business Plan only.

However, we have several free themes available which allows for a variety of different types of sites at My Site ->Themes.

Just adding here that if you’d still like to give WordPress.com a try, you can request recovery of your recently deleted site by replying to the email you received from WordPress.com. Recovery is available for 30 days following deletion.

It was still very much still in the experimental stage when I decided this site wouldn’t meet my needs, so there’s nothing of value to recover. But I appreciate the thought.
