WP Cost
-
I always thought WP was free but now that I would like to use it appears that it is not. I was prompted from the get go to sign up for a paid subscription. There was not any option for free service. I suppose if there is a free option, it has no frills and is difficult to use?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi marcycarmack,
We provide the option to create free sites but certain features like custom domains (without .wordpress.com in the address) are only available through our paid plans. Were you trying to add a custom domain when you saw a message prompting you to upgrade?
-
Yes I was. Thank you for your response. I think it is kind of overkill to make that only available for paid plans. I’ve had my domain for quite some time and I pay for it so it seems unreasonable that I would have to pay more.
What do you think?

Domain mapping is not done free of charge. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Incoming domain transfers are also not done free of charge https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/ -
@marcycarmack paid plans help us cover our costs for the free sites we host.
We offer a personal plan that includes a domain, extra space, removes our ads, and gives you direct support access, or you’re also welcome to use the free software at another host of your choice:
