wrong storage capacity shown

    Hello guys,
I have only 20 images on my site ‘drifter2week.wordpress.com’ and I get the information in my media library that I’m using 1.4 GB, what is totally wrong. It may only be 100 MB. (By the way: the trash is empty.)
    Can you help me?

    All the best, Volker

Hi Volker, I’ve gone ahead and flagged this thread for Staff attention to address the discrepancy, but I had a look at your site and your drawing scans in PNG format are very large, both in pixel dimensions and in kbs.

For example, drifter2week.files.wordpress.com/2019/09/32d5d-countryside.png comes in at 3000 pixels by 2000 pixels and 10.5MBs which is much too large for displaying on a website, unless you are inviting someone to download and print it.

Have a look at the Quick Specs at the bottom of the theme showcase page for your theme Colinear https://wordpress.com/theme/colinear No image needs to be larger than what is listed there and if you are looking to display a larger size, 1600 pixels wide at 72 ppi is enough. That way you are optimizing both your images for the web and maximizing your storage space. Have a look at our guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/

  • Hi there,

Your site’s Media Library has 1,120 images and each one of those is several megabytes. So the capacity shown is accurate.

If you want to delete images to free up space you can follow these instructions:

    No! I have two blogs Drifter’s Week 1 “driftersweek.wordpress.com” and Drifter’s Week 2 “drifter2week.wordpress.com”. The link to my old blog Drifter’s Week 1 is mistaken by me. It’s about drifter2week.wordpress.com – with a 2 as S.

    Thanks for your help!

Hello again Volker, staff will reply about the discrepancy on drifter2week.wordpress.com when they look again in this thread.

You mentioned Trash. Did you delete images at drifter2week.wordpress.com? It may be that deleted media is still present in the WordPressdotcom cache. *This is automatically emptied after a few days.*

But what both @fstat and I mentioned is that you are uploading images that are needlessly very large. In order to maximize your storage space and reduce visitor load times (especially important because of mobile), you’ll want to resize and optimize your images before uploading them to your website. Please see the resources I linked to in my earlier reply.

Yes I did, Jennifer. That may be the reason. Thanks a lot for your fast and committed actions. I already read your link to optimized pictures. I published a new image in jpg reduced to 80 % in a smaller size. The difference in quality is for me not visible. Your arguments (long loading time and probably downloding and reprinting – hurting my copyright) has convinced me to do this from now on.

Once again, thank you and have a nice weekend!

    All the best, Volker.
