Bio
i have a mild case of a disorder known as Asperger's syndrome. there i said it. for years i have said i didn't have it but the truth is i have ALWAYS acknowledged having all the quirky personality traits that go along with this disorder, i have just felt that putting a label on it simplifies it too much. i am special and i have always known it, slapping a label on, i feel cheapens it. i refuse to say... "Asperger's" as a quick explanation for every social problem i have, i have an unusual set of personality traits that sometimes cause problems for me. when they do, i prefer to say "i sometimes unintentionally yell" or "i have difficulty accepting change" instead of saying "Asperger's" like it's a magic get-out-of-jail-free-card. i try to explain the symptoms instead of calling it a disorder like it needs fixing. you know what? i like having Asperger's. i like being interested in things other people aren't and seeing the world a little bit differently. but you know what else? the convenient label doesn't do me justice. it does not fully explain why i am prone to feeling depressed, for example, there are other factors and saying i was born this way makes those other factors seem meaningless. also, one symptom of Asperger's is supposedly lack of empathy and empathy is something i most certainly DO NOT lack. empathy is something i greatly value and would not be who i am without it. i am a unique individual just like everybody else and Asperger's is not the ONLY reason why i have problems nor is it the ONLY reason for all the things i love about myself. it contributes to both my good side and my bad side but so do many other things that have happened in my life. i do have Asperger's syndrome but i do not wish to be put in a convenient little box that ignores everything else about me and oversimplifies my personality quirks. wanna know why they haven't cured cancer yet? because cancer isn't one disease, it is a complex group of diseases that likely will never have a one-size-fits-all-cure. the general population oversimplifies it by slapping a word on it and ignoring it's complexities. if you are packing to move and you label a box "DVDs" try not to forget that it does not necesarily contain ONLY DVDs nor does it necesarily contain ALL your DVDs. when i said all this in a facebook status it led to my Aunt suggesting i start this blog.
