Bio
Karen R. Adams
Lic Ac, Dipl Ac, BS, BA(Hons)
Karen trained at the College of Traditional Acupuncture in the UK, where she received her Licentiate in Acupuncture and a BA(Hons) from Oxford Brooks University in 2003.
She began receiving acupuncture herself during an extremely trying time in her life, and says 'acupuncture is what kept me on the planet, so much so that I wanted to make it not only a career, but a way of life, a personal cultivation'.
She returned to the US in 2005 after she became a grandmother, and traveled to New Orleans to provide acupuncture for the survivors and first responders of Hurricane Katrina. That experience had a profound impact on her.
'I was so impressed at acupuncture's benefits for trauma survivors - and very aware that many, many people who could use this were unable to because of the way it was being delivered in the US: one-on-one at a high price. My service in New Orleans led me to search for other ways to provide acupuncture that were more accessible. That search had already led me to Acupuncturists Without Borders and their efforts to provide free acupuncture to disaster victims and to returning military personnel. I then discovered Working Class Acupuncture and the movement for community style clinics. And that led me to found Greenfield Community Acupuncture.'
Karen has a focus on trauma recovery, including combat and critical incident trauma, and she has been providing a free clinic for veterans, military personnel, first responders and their families since 2007.
She also has a commitment to providing care that working people can afford, and that will help them return to their normal lives as soon as they can, whether that is through pain or injury recovery or stress relief.
'I love all the many facets of acupuncture, all the possible 'delivery systems'. While I was trained in working one-on-one with patients, the community style is so wonderful. I love the energy people create and share while they heal, the connections they make with each other. I raised my kids while I was on welfare, and I was so frustrated to be unable to afford things I knew could make me well. I am so grateful to have been able to bring this model to Greenfield.'
Karen has a private practice that shares space with GCA, and you can visit her website at www.adamsacupuncture.net, and on Facebook at Karen Adams Acupuncture.
