Bio
Hello and welcome to my blog. My name is Patricia Conteh. I was born and raised in Sierra Leone and grew up eating potato leaves and other sauces. Have you ever wondered what the nutritional value of West African foods is? How do they fit into what we know about health and fitness? How healthy are my favorite West African dishes? Can I eat my ethnic food and maintain my weight or lose weight?
I left Sierra Leone in 1970 to study nursing and became a Registered Nurse in 1973 and a Nurse Practitioner in 1997 with a specialty in Mental Health. I am retired but continue to stay connected to my professional network and still practice a few hours a week. I also take classes in functional medicine to continue learning and increase the depth of my knowledge. My favorite dish is potato leaves, and they are the first thing I looked for as I moved to different parts of the world. I can confidently tell you where to find the freshest potato leaves in many places.
As I bring together parts of my professional and personal journey, I see a profound connection between diet, exercise, and mental health. These connections sparked the idea that I could share this information with those who might share the same interests. It took me several years of research and data collection to bring this idea to fruition, and I am ready to share this fascinating information with you all. This blog will focus on cultural and ethnic foods from Sierra Leone and West Africa at large. Readers of this blog can expect to learn about the nutritional values and healing properties of well-known and not-so-well-known ingredients and dishes. I will gladly accept feedback and suggestions from readers who are interested in learning more about indigenous cuisines and condiments unique to Sierra Leone and other West African countries.
