Bio
I was born in Peru, where my father was working as a geologist and my mother was working as a sociologist. For the most part, I grew up in the state of Colorado.
I went to Golden High school, and then obtained an undergraduate degree in Ecology (with a minor in Spanish) at the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1982. After college I served in the United States Peace Corps, teaching fish farming in Zaire (now called the Democratic Republic of the Congo), Africa.
Upon return, I worked for the United States National Marine Fisheries Service and for the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. My role was as a biologist and compliance agent on foreign fisheries vessels, and I spent nearly 5 years at sea in the Bering sea, Gulf of Alaska and off of our Pacific coast. When in New Zealand, I worked around both their main islands, and as far south as the sub-Antarctic ocean.
Subsequent to this fisheries work, I pursued graduate studies at Oregon State University, doing research in Aquaculture and International Agricultural Economics. I obtained my masters of science education from OSU in 1992.
Over the years, I have worked and traveled extensively across the globe, including most of the countries in South America, as well as India, Europe, and Australia. I have also taken several special trips to watch solar eclipses, and just this summer, went back to Hawaii to run a public viewing event for the Transit of Venus.
My most recent employment experience in education is 18 years teaching high school science in Hawaii, where I spent 14 years at Kauai High school, Kauai, and 4 years at Mililani High on Oahu. While on Oahu, I also worked for the University of Hawaii's John Burns school of medicine Cardiovascular Research Center, helping with a study on heart muscle genetics.
Sometimes as a tourist, and sometimes as part of work, I've been lucky in my life to have traveled to all 7 continents. My most recent trip was the most adventuresome of all- In 2010 I went to Antarctica. While there, I got married on a glacier in the middle of a penguin colony!
In my free time, I paddle 6-man Hawaiian outrigger canoe with my club, Bellingham Bay Outrigger Paddlers, do gardening and photography.
Suffice it to say, I am passionate about science, and delight in bringing my broad experiences and joy of learning into the classroom.
