Bio
ALTHOUGH I am now a UK pensioner, I worked as a newspaper and magazine columnist, feature writer, essayist, reviewer and occasional poet from the mid-1980s to the end of 2018. However, I still write for fun.
Originally, I was a musician: playing guitar in a couple of moderately successful rock 'n' pop groups in and around London, England during the 1960s and into the 1970s. On the strength of my background in 'live' music, my UK print media career began in 1986 when I was invited to write a weekly entertainments column called "Rhythm and Booze" in my local Torbay Weekender newspaper. One year later, I moved across town to the South Devon Herald Express provincial daily newspaper where I began writing the weekly showbiz column "The LoweDown". That column enjoyed an unbroken run of very nearly 25 years, during which time, I also worked as a freelance reviewer and critic for The Stage and Television Today national weekly newspaper, plus the What's On South West monthly magazine.
Along the way, I also notched-up dozens of published feature articles and essays on a wide variety of subjects, including several short stories (some of which I've posted to these WordPress pages). Until December 2018, I wrote a column titled "Pensioners Platform" as a volunteer contributor in the monthly UK community newspaper The Torbay Times.
In addition to the above, I was a freelance radio producer-presenter and, between 1981 and 2014, I made thousands of music-based and other radio programmes for the B.B.C. and UK Independent Local Radio. Then from July 2017 to May 2024, I made nostalgic music-based programmes for my local community radio station Riviera FM, as a volunteer producer-presenter. Unfortunately, late in 2024 health issues forced me into hospital and stop making programmes for Rivera FM. However, my health improved sufficiently in early 2025 to allow me to join the Torquay based DAB station South Devon Radio. Sadly, my health deteriorated significantly again, in September 2025, and I ended up in hospital several times more, until December 29. I'm now housebound and using a Zimmer frame or walking stick to get around the ground floor of my home. But I'm still able to type on my tablets using just the thumb of my right hand. I'm now contemplating adding some of my health related notes to this WordPress site, and given today's problems in the Anglican Church I'm also toying with the idea of writing about my own experiences prior to, during and after my Church of England activities.
Quite apart from all the above, I'm an independent author and actor working under my pen and stage name of Lewis Adler.
