I, Dr Rashid Masood, was born in Allahabad City, Uttar Pradesh, India in the year 1946. I retired as an Economist from the Petrochemicals Data Service (PDS) created by the Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited (IPCL), Vadodara under the Ministry of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, New Delhi, India. My father late Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Qureshi (1916-1994), son of late Haji Abdul Quddus (1889-1968) belonged to a Zamindar family of Sheikhpur, Pargana Chail, though he spent his life in Allahabad City. He retired as a Principal of Islamia Inter College, Muzaffarnagar, U.P. My mother late Mrs. Masuda Mushtaq (1920-2001) was daughter of late Khan Bahadur Nawab Syed Muhammad Isa of village Niwan, PraganaChail, Allahabad. My elder brother Dr Ahmad Masood, born in 1944 in Allahabad City, Uttar Pradesh, retired as an Advisor in Planning Commission, New Delhi. I descend in the direct male line from the great sufi saint Makhdoom Muhammad Ismail Al-Quraishi Al-Asadi Al-Hashmi Suhrawardy (1260-1349) (rahmatullahalaih) of Bamrauli, Pragana Chail, Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. The family lineage of Makhdoom Sheikh Muhammad Ismail Al-Quraishi Al-Asadi Al-Hashmi Suhrawardy (rahmatullahalaih) is traced back to Asad (485-582), the son of Hashim (464-497), grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). (Sir Lepel H. Griffin,”The Punjab Chief”,vol I & II Edn.2, Lahore: Civil & Military Gazette Press, 1890). This is worth to mention here that Muhammad Rasool Allah (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was third in descent from Hashim bin Abd al-Manaf while I am 34th in descent from Hashim bin Abd al-Manaf.
I was a Consulting Economist in Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited (April 1989-August 1991) to develop a platform for petrochemicals. The Petrochemicals Data Service was established in 1989 for economic analysis and preparation of business news letters, reports on corporate planning & development covering various aspects of global petrochemicals industry.
I worked as an Economist in Petrochemicals Data Service, Baroda created by the Indian Petrochemicals Corporation of India (IPCL) under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India, New Delhi, India. For about 30 years I have been engaged in intensive research work with specialization in International Economics and hydrocarbon-based industries in the Arab Gulf. I have travelled extensively in the Arab-Gulf States viz., Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, the UAE etc. which provided an in-depth study of their socio-economic problems and progress. My trip to Arab-Gulf States was sponsored by JNU and Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) in 1984-85 and again to Saudi Arabia sponsored by ICSSR to collect research material and data for my Ph.D. Thesis and Book respectively. In 1991-92, I visited Kathmandu, sponsored by the Petrochemicals Data Service, Vadodara, Gujarat to attend international Trade Fair in order to study and analyze the marketing prospects of the petrochemicals end-products in Nepal.
I obtained Master's degree in Economics from Allahabad University, Allahabad and M.Phil./Ph.D. degrees from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.
I am an author of two books and have contributed chapters in six edited books on Industrialization in oil-based economies and have also written an Encyclopedia of Gujarat State. In the books viz., (1)" Economic Diversification and Development in Saudi Arabia", (2) "Industrialization in Oil-based Economies : A Case Study of Saudi Arabia", major emphasis has been laid on the analysis indigenous availability of workforce skill wise vis-à-vis their demand and problems associated with expatriates in Arab-Gulf. Apart from feedstock and technology, workers and their skills also play a crucial role in petrochemicals industry. Therefore, it has been examined how Saudi Arabia has comparative advantage in petrochemical production. A number of book reviews have been published in journals in India and abroad.
My publications include a bi-monthly journal, country profiles, project reports, research papers in national seminar publications, and several articles in various standard journals. My interviews were published in Indian and foreign newspapers as also an interview was also broadcasted from Abu Dhabi (UAE) Radio Station.
