Bio
Who is Kirk Wilson?
He is a life-long resident of Carlisle. A graduate of Carlisle High School, Point Park University, Pittsburgh and Eastern University, St. David’s with majors in Journalism and Communications and Organization Management.
Wilson is probably best known for the 26 years he served as mayor of Carlisle, PA. During his 6 ½ terms, he:
-- Took a downtown vacant lot that sat idle for 30 years and developed a first-class hotel and an adjacent parking garage,
-- Revitalized a vacant dilapidated shopping mall into a fully utilized shopping center,
-- Resolved a dispute between a developer, environmentalists and the state Department of Environmental Protection over construction of a controversial water detention system that has proved successful and allowed construction of a development while protecting the adjacent Letort Spring Run designated an exceptional value wild and scenic river,
-- Rebuilt a police department that was accredited by the PCPA, and -- Captured numerous state and federal grants for borough-related projects.
He was a member of the board of directors of the Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities (currently the Pennsylvania Municipal League) from 1991 to 2012, serving as president in 2003-2004. He was a trustee on the league’s Penn PRIME, a municipal insurance trust.
Wilson worked in radio and television news for 8 years. He also freelanced for the Carlisle Sentinel and Harrisburg Patriot-News.
He spent 33 years in various capacities in state government, working for both houses of the Pennsylvania General Assembly and under four governors.
Semi-retired, he is currently a substitute teacher for the Carlisle, PA Area School District.
