Bio
My name is Kyle Westley Murphy and I was raised in Manchester, Tennessee. I am currently a Multimedia Journalism major attending Middle Tennessee State University. The idea of a career in reporting the news never crossed my mind, yet the signs were always there. My grandfather instilled in me early on that I should be aware of what’s going on the world by watching the news.
I took his advice and I found my inspiration to pursue journalism from the YouTube channel Philip DeFranco. Seeing someone who doesn’t have a journalism degree carrying the same principle and guidelines motivated me to do something that makes me happy. After some time and reflection, writing stories and crafting them together to make a connection to my audience makes me happy.
Before attending MTSU, I was majoring in computer engineering before switching to electrical engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. My dad and grandfather worked in engineering fields, and I wanted to be like them, but instead of engines and circuit boards, I wanted to pursue video game design. Yet, after three years I realized I didn’t want to be an engineer because I did not have the passion. With help from career counselors, I learned that journalism was more what I wanted to do as a career. Once I started my classes, I did not regret my decision.
My time in Huntsville laid the foundation for my passion for sharing and telling stories; as well as, taking the time to understand the technology and how it works. During my time at MTSU, I rediscovered my love for writing. In high school, I always loved the process of writing a script, shooting video, and editing it together for final video projects for classes. Back then I had old camcorders to shoot videos and video editing software to edit the videos together. Sometimes it would take hours to do it, but I enjoyed every second of it.
I love the challenge of finding a story and coming up with a way to tell it to an audience. That engagement is what I enjoy about journalism.
