POET's PROFILE
Lal Ratnakar at 61 carries with himself a rich experience of life and people from closest possible level, from shanty-towns to plush AC-ed offices or hotels and has rubbed shoulder with high and mighty while knowing practically all the new and old journalists in the state of Bihar(India) on a personal level because of being key member of front-ranking unions looking after the welfare of journalists in the state.
Enjoying wide-ranging levels of friends and acquaintances from all walks of life possible, he is not only an author and poet-****-journalist but is also a social activist besides being gifted with power to `search and research for new and novel things. He is also an expert on alternate system of medicines, thanks to which he had been able to live without Allopathic medicines for the last 37 years, save and except for three weeks only.
Before joining working journalism, Mr. Lal Ratnakar was already the author of a booklet titled “Towards Continuous Waterpower Everywhere” that earned appreciation not only from abroad but from within the country. He also won patent for his theory of continuous pumped storage system dealt with in the said booklet.
Interaction with US Department of Energy on the theory attracted highly flattering and life-defining comment reading as thus: …
`` Not may people are even aware of the concept of pumped storage and both your awareness and creativity in seeking to apply the concept are impressive.”
Similarly, sharing of the concept with the office of in-charge of Mission on Energy under late Prime Minister of India Mr. Rajiv Gandhi also won equally satisfying comment reading as ….`` the first impressions are that the principle is theoretically sound…. It would be worthwhile to put up a pilot plant...”
Mr. Ratnakar has a running hobby for ideation and creation from early stage and has won patent for path-breaking tea/coffee products with effect from Feb-2002. He has also won another patent for unique Fold-And-Carry furniture valid for the same period..
Department of Science & Technology in Government of India also expressed its appreciation in the following words
"We acknowledge your contribution to science & technology and congratulate you on winning an Indian patent for your innovation."
Renowned Professor Dr Sujoy Guha of IIT-Kharagpur and leading light of Bihar State Innovation Council, who himself had won as many as 40 patents, said the following:
The patents you have would be a matter of pride for scientists in reputed laboratories. For an independent investigator to have reached a level is an achievement of highest order which should be respected and awarded. It is privilege to know a person like you."
In another breath on another day, he gushed as follows:
It was really nice meeting you in Patna. It is a pleasure to see that some people in India are so innovative as you...Rs.10L (for Detailed Project Report by CIPET) is a very small amount for the nation to spend on an item which no doubt will have mass usage.
Mr Ratnakar has recently invented an unique polymeric glue strictly from vegetable source and, based on that, a versatile paint which is applicable on wall-wood-ironwork with same finish and ease.
Once a journalist, always a journalist one would like to be. But leaving nothing to compulsion or vagaries of job of a working journalist, Mr Ratnakar is on the verge of finalizing few irresistible products in the world of media and printing.
Mr. Ratnakar continues to be associated with the so-called world’s no 1 English daily (TOI) at Patna since 1987, having learnt the ropes at erstwhile Searchlight which has been converted into Patna edition of Hindustan Times" today. Having worked in all departments of journalism without any dot, Mr Ratnakar can claim being the first to coin the word NRB (non-resident Bihari) and has the debatable distinction of being a journalist whose heading (`Bloody Business’ given by him on his own report in Searchlight in 1984) got repeated in HT during the last year of nineties. On reporting side, it may be informed that he took initiative for TOI’s all-India story on fake currency notes flooding the market and households and which remained pasted on many petrol pumps in Patna for months
Despite being busy with hum-drum of journalism, Mr Ratnakar completed his book of autobiographical collection of poems titled `KHAYAL-e-AAM’(or Deevan-e-Jindagi) in Hindi or COMMONERS' CROONING ( translation of Hindi work into English) which are at advanced level of publication.He has completed his collection of poems under the title of LAYMAN'S LYRICS and giving a polishing touch to it. But by virtue of being bilingual (English & Hindi), Mr Ratnakar is also attempting translation of his Hindi poems into English. The word “Kalamjeevi” coined by him to help define a journalist has gained currency in all Hindi dailies of Patna. Mr Ratnakar can also claim having started new genre of journalism: POETIC JOURNALISM ie penning down poems in response to popular events or personality. Mr Ratnakar is giving final touches to his autobiographical book, HALF JOURNALIST(in Hindi and English, both), giving completer account of his struggle to remain a journalist when he found himself all alone in his crusade for Right To Right Wages. The book will be sprinkled or peppered with one stanza of all the poems he "picked up on road".
Relying on his innovation skills, Mr Ratnakar will definitely take a Copyright Call on new style of publishing poems.
Once a upright journalist, call of conscience and activism was wily-nily bound to catch up with Lal Ratnakar. When his own employer rebuffed his offer to utilize his free-flowing intelligence to add to the bottom-line and product-line, Mr Ratnakar calmly turned towards workers in general who accepted his plea for lawful process and peaceful manner and readily acted accordingly.
Risking the security of his job. he piloted few judicial innovations through lawful processes by unions in realizing what was due under Wage Board Award to journalists and non-journalists in the state culminating into a landmark judgment by Apex Court in October 2012 due to which journalists can now take hitherto unknown route of adopting State Act to get the award announced under Working Journalists Act. Looking at the sheer import of these cases, the government of Bihar was pleased to take the side of union and filed its own petitions on the side of union in Apex Court in the cases. Mr Ratnakar impressively taxed and teased the senior and renowned lawyers empluyed by rich employer and stands on the verge of breaking the 50-year record of the union in terms of quantum of sum (Rs 11.68 crore to begin with) involved. As the leader looking for journalists’ welfare, Mr. Ratnakar is renowned for his firm belief in the negotiated settlement of any dispute and `table manners’ in managing big solutions at the negotiation table.
Incidentally or interestingly, none in the homely environment Mr Ratnakar lives in had ever been inside circle of one-mile radius around activism.
Earlier, during his school and college days, Mr. Ratnakar was ICI-Scholar, a world-wide company notable for pioneer research in cardio-vascular medicines besides critical care and veterinary medicines and completed few parts in Cost Accountancy. Deriving strength from his knowledge in CA, Mr Ratnakar has customised and converted Lotus Approach into separate softwares for the businesses of stockist, consignee sales agent and paint shops
