Bio
My name is Emily and I'm a Writer from Queensland, Australia. I moved here from Victoria in 1990 when I was seven years old. I am now a thirty-something year old Special Needs Parent to my son, Owen. Silence & The Spectrum is the raw, real and uncensored account of what life is like for both myself and Owen when it comes to living with Severe Autism and a string of other Disabilities. If you're looking for a Blog that has the theme of "Autism is a Blessing", then you're in the wrong place.
I find that sugarcoating any sort of reality dims the creative process of writing - so I refuse to do that. I am brutally honest about the good, the bad, the ugly and everything in between with all of my work. I always have been.
From a very young age, I knew that writing was my passion, my love, my purpose. By the time I was twelve years old I had written lyrics for songs that I would sing in music class, I had won several poetry contests and I would often write short fictional stories at every opportunity I was given. When I was fourteen years old, I had my first fictional short story published (The Black Silent Nights - Shades of Darkness 1997).
Writing will always be my solace, my sanctuary and my true first love. I am now a passionate food writer and have had recipes posted on Beach Harvest as well as a published e-book (Australian Vegan Foodies: Beginners Cookbook) that I co-collaborated on. Our second cookbook will be available for purchase in 2017. Apart from my published work, I am the writer of both this Blog - Silence & The Spectrum and my other Blog - Vegan In Training.
Several posts from Silence & The Spectrum have been featured on Australian parenting websites, and several parts of one particular post titled 'The Day You Went Away' were published in The Courier Mail and Kidspot in late 2015. My focus is primarily on Silence & The Spectrum right now - so watch this space, as big news (and changes) are in the works.
