Bio

I'm an anthropologist trained in the linguistic, cultural and applied subfields. I completed my Ph.D. at the University of Arizona and have conducted fieldwork in southeast Spain and the U.S., focusing on multicultural educational environments, immigrant and refugee inclusion and the communicative construction of shared value systems in changing democracies. By exploring both state and non-state contexts of intercultural meeting, I keep noodling on topics important to me since I was a kid: multilingualism, the meaning of "home" and place and the experiences of migrants and their children. I'm just starting new work around the theme of "language as community resource," aiming to bring awareness and attention to the myriad ways that language and ways of using language hold value and creative potential for people locally. This blog, however, is devoted to a larger conversation about culture, life and meaning -- a conversation I have every semester with my students in my introductory cultural anthropology courses. It's their work that will be showcased here.
