Bio
The K-5 Art Curriculum here at John Glenn is designed to develop student knowledge of art materials, art history, art techniques, art vocabulary, and art processes. It is also my goal for children to learn how to work together in a healthy and cooperative classroom environment.
Each grade level completes different art projects based on a variety of artists or art movements. Every project is set up to build upon knowledge acquired in previous lessons
As students move from grade to grade, their knowledge of the arts will increase. My ultimate goal is for each child to leave this school with a better understanding and appreciation for the arts.
While art is certainly not subservient to regular subjects, I believe that its integration with other subjects connects the wholeness of each person, each community, and each culture to the other.
For that reason, we may talk about ratios in 5th grade while studying proportions in drawing –or- we may design hot air balloons and talk about molecules and temperature. Investigation of the beliefs and values of a particular culture might be evidenced in anything from a charcoal drawing to a mask or a sarcophagus lid. I want my students to build on their understanding of themselves and their world through their own creativity.
Other goals are accomplished through our work in the art room. We learn to:
-Collaborate
-Negotiate
-Be flexible in our thinking
-Challenge ourselves
-Look for new possibilities in apparent mistakes
-Simultaneously begin with a plan, but be open to the process
-Respect the ideas and work of others
-Build on ideas
-Celebrate a job well done
Creating art of any kind fills the spirit and connects us to others.
