Bio
Peter M. Alexander is a retired staff member from the University of Iowa, where he was director of media relations for the arts for 23 years. Since his retirement in 2009 he has lived in Longmont, Co. He wrote for Boulder Weekly for several years. He plays principal clarinet in community bands in Boulder and Longmont and has performed in orchestras for Boulder Opera.
He has been a contributor to the New Grove Dictionary of Music, Czech Music and Notes, among other publications, and has written a chapter on the symphonies of Karl von Ordonez for Vol. I of The Symphonic Repertoire (Indiana University Press: 2012). While his research on Ordonez and Franz Danzi came from his interest in 18th- and early 19th-century music, his location in Iowa involved him the celebration of Dvorak’s 1893 visit to the state. In 1993 he directed the Dvorak Centennial Symposium at the University of Iowa and assisted the town of Spillville with their celebration. He completed a Ph.D. in musicology at Indiana University, where he wrote his dissertation on “The Chamber Music of Franz Danzi: Sources, Chronology and Style.”
