Bio
I extensive experience in the professional archaeology and heritage sector, working with commercial organisations, museums, academic institutions and national bodies to deliver policy updates, options appraisals and implement best practice guidance. An experienced project manager and researcher, I previously held the post of Project Manager at Birmingham Archaeology and latterly as Research Fellow within the department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology at the University of Birmingham. Currently I work as an independent consultant, specialising in engagement with archaeological archives, and the use of archaeology within museums. In 2020 I completed my PhD researching the value and sustainability of archaeological archives museums titled ‘Why do we have this? A study of museum approaches to retention and disposal of archaeological archives.’
I am experienced in the delivery of consultation and research projects, with deep and diverse experience of working within the heritage sector as data creators and users, archive collection and access, and heritage researchers. Most recently I have been part of the Sustainable Options for Archaeological Archives project team (2020-2021), compiling detailed feasibility studies for the long-term management of England’s archives for Historic England and Arts Council England. The follow up project (2024) delivered in-depth user needs analysis for the proposed National Collection.
in 2024 I have worked with Manda Forster of Tacit Heritage to develop a suite of guidance documentation and fee proposals for Scotland’s Archaeology Strategy. I have previously managed the development of deposition standards for archaeological archives across England (Gloucestershire County Council; Hertfordshire Councils, Peterborough and Birmingham museums), a review of archaeological collections and archives in the West Midlands regional museums (West Midlands Museum Development Programme) and developed and delivered a Selection Toolkit Toolkit of Archaeological Projects (HE Funded project for CIfA).
I currently lead the Peterborough Archaeological Archive Enhancement project (2021 – 2025 funded by Headley Trust and Historic England). This ambitious project requiring collaborative working with the museum, local authorities, commercial organisations and volunteers is addressing an urgent local need as well as developing methodologies and best practices that are applicable to museums throughout the country. The project has recently been recognised for its development of an impactful volunteer programme by the SMA.I extensive experience in the professional archaeology and heritage sector, working with commercial organisations, museums, academic institutions and national bodies to deliver policy updates, options appraisals and implement best practice guidance.
