I'm an author, and I'm a man, but above all else, I think that the worst issues currently plaguing society are the same ones that have allowed it to grow to such a diverse and expansive level. The introduction of a financial system to replace the age-old practice of bartering for goods due to larger populations and increased amounts of produced goods, and the impracticality of such a system at high populous levels, has created a dichotomous, classist struggle between people who do not have enough money to sustain themselves and produce goods, and those with enough money to provide for many of whom profit from the producers. While there will always, in my eyes, be a division of class so long as such a system is in place, it can be seen that all people value money, and view success as being included within a higher socio-economic demographic (having a good job, good car, lots of moolah). At the end of our lives, we all die; this is irrefutable. We are unable to take any of our possessions with us, and so regardless of our success (based on this model of materialist and financial-based success) we must measure the quality of our lives in our final moments. I think that anyone would look back on their life and not regret not having a car or a house or a yacht, but would rather regret not having loved, or seen their children grow up, and so on. Would it not, taking this into account, be said that to be successful would then be to have lived a life in which you are loved, and have been loved? That this would be to be successful is how I hope all people would measure success, however too often do I find that it's the opposite; many are considered unsuccessful for working in minimum wage jobs or commuting to work rather than saving up for their own car. In my mind, I am successful because the people I interact with usually walk away of good disposition, with a positive memory of our interaction.
tl;dr
Friendliness, positivity, and love are all anyone needs to be successful; materialism and financial gain are just life-goals that marketing companies brainwash into people in order to convince them to consume more of their product.
